Ministers should consider writing a maximum distance for daily exercise into law, Britain’s most senior police officer has said.

Dame Cressida Dick, commissioner of the Metropolitan Police, said “clarity” was needed over the definition of local exercise in England at a time of rising concerns about public compliance with lockdown guidance and loopholes in the law.

She said that ministers should consider introducing restrictions on travel for exercise similar to those imposed in Scotland and Wales, where there are strict limits. “Anything that brings greater clarity would be a good thing,” she told Today on BBC Radio 4.
