A senior Tory backbencher has called for greater consistency in government communications after Downing Street denied it had ever planned a big campaign to get people back to the office.

The prime minister’s official spokesman rejected reports that an advertising blitz due to begin on Friday had been shelved, saying: “There has never been a ‘back to work campaign’.”

Instead, he said there was a “press partnership campaign with regional and local media” on coronavirus topics. “We are promoting how to make your workplace Covid secure so more people can work from the office,” he added.
