Matt Hancock has backed the head of the NHS Test and Trace system following calls for her to resign over its failure to trace enough infections.

The health secretary said today he “pays tribute” to Baroness Harding of Wiscombe and everyone involved in delivering the “incredibly important” system.

“We’ve built one of the biggest organisations in the country in a few short months and that has been a huge channel,” he told Sky. “What it delivers is now over a third of a million tests a day.” He said the system had an “extraordinary scale of operation”.

Lady Harding has faced calls to quit from senior figures including Sir Bernard Jenkin, chairman of the powerful Commons liaison committee, over the weekend.
