Global stock markets have fallen on fears that new coronavirus restrictions across Europe will hit the economic recovery from the pandemic.

Britain’s blue chip index dropped 1.8 per cent to 5,832.52 as London was declared higher risk and subject to more limitations on movement. More than half the population is now in the two highest risk categories.

European shares had their worst day in three and a half weeks as Paris was also hit with new restrictions. Other European nations are closing schools, cancelling surgeries and enlisting student medics to help prepare for a health crisis.
