Tourism and hospitality chiefs have accused the government of “penalising” the sector by failing to confirm a date for facilities to reopen.

Bodies representing pubs, B&Bs and holiday parks said that hundreds of thousands of jobs were under threat because of delays in Westminster.

Campsites and holiday park owners especially had hoped to be given the green light to open from July 4. They said that customers faced having their holidays cancelled because of a lack of clear information from the government.

The trade body UK Hospitality urged ministers to provide clarity. “We need confirmation of the reopening date for hospitality businesses without further delay,” Kate Nicholls, its chief executive, said. “Businesses need time to prepare and the first step in giving them some much-needed
