The age of presenteeism — the fear of leaving your desk — is over, according to the boss of one of Britain’s biggest accountancy firms.

Kevin Ellis, chairman of PwC, which has 22,000 staff in Britain, said that the shift to working from home caused by Covid-19 had “bashed away presenteeism for ever”.

Financial services firms are often associated with long office hours that eat into evenings and weekends, although they had been edging towards more flexible working arrangements before the coronavirus struck.

Ellis, who said he had never worked from home before, suggested there was no longer a playbook for workers and employers. Even so, he is encouraging staff to return to the firm’s offices on a voluntary basis. Ellis, 57, said some were
