Global stock markets suffered their biggest weekly and monthly declines since March after shares fell again yesterday in response to concerns about the economic impact of new lockdowns around the world.

The FTSE 100, London’s top tier of listed companies, fell in all five sessions this week, sliding 4.8 per cent to 5,577.27, its lowest in nearly seven months.

It thus ended October down 4.9 per cent, the biggest monthly fall since March, when the first stage of the Covid-19 pandemic was its peak. The index, which fell by 0.1 per cent yesterday, is 26 per cent below the peak it hit in February, although still 11.7 per cent above the lows it reached at the end of March.
