For most children in England and Wales, September will be the first time they have set foot in a classroom for nearly six months. Yet schools will not be the same as they left them. From thermometer checks to classrooms in marquees, every aspect of the school day has been altered to keep children, teachers and their families safe.

Temperature checks
Schools will measure children’s temperature as they arrive. Parents will be told not to allow pupils to go to school if there is even a chance they have Covid-19 symptoms. Most will use hand-held devices to take temperatures from children’s foreheads. The King David High School in Manchester has installed thermal cameras, which can measure 30 pupils’ temperatures a second as they walk past.
